Individual therapy with Ulumma Joseph, LCSW

Individual Therapy

Seeking help for oneself can be challenging. That’s why, as a therapist, I provide a strengths-based, calming, caring, supportive atmosphere that allows clients to engage in the therapeutic or consultation process from a place of acceptance, peace, and clarity. I aim to have clients feel understood and valued for who they are. Therapy is a place that is not just about being seen and heard, but it’s a place where you can see and hear yourself. I specialize in helping clients find solutions to problems related to depression, anxiety, life transitions, and traumatic experiences.I offer a full spectrum of individual therapy treatment modalities which include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR, motivational interviewing, and conventional psychotherapy/psychoanalysis. As a clinical social worker I have been trained to pay attention to strengths and challenges in all aspects of your life, i.e. your relationships, work life, family life, health, cultural and religious influences, social life, etc.  I am also attuned to the internal conflicts, both conscious and out of awareness, which may be at the root of painful feelings, non-productive behaviors, and relationship difficulties.

Adjusting to Life's Most Difficult Moments

At some point, most of us will live through a difficult life situation.  It could be a difficult job, challenging relationship issues, family issues, issues stemming from childhood, financial hardships, an adjustment to medical diagnosis, death of a loved one—or perhaps a pain inflicted by another person in the form of assault or abuse. While everyone's reaction to life's struggles is unique, one major common reaction is the feeling of self-blame or shame.  I work to treat the self blame that can often come with coping with life difficulties.  This is important as self-blame can be the underlying biggest hindrance to making progress in therapy, recovering from trauma, building positive relationships, and moving forward with life. With empathy and understanding, my aim as a therapist is to empower you to tell your story and help you to find peace, insight, and motivation to move forward so you can begin living your best life.

Exceeding Expectations One Patient at a Time

As a therapist and social worker, with over 15 years experience I have spent my career dedicated to the emotional and behavioral success of my clients. Over the span of my career, I have worked with schools, community-based agencies, foster youth and families, and major hospitals. Since 2012 I have worked in Kaiser Permanente’s Psychiatry Department and recently decided to open my doors to the public in my own private practice.  I have had the privilege to work with people of all ages from small children to seniors, couples and families, various professions, communities, ethnicities, nationalities, religions, genders, and LGBTQIA+ community. In addition, I have gained valuable knowledge and skills working with a large variety of mental health issues including Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Work Stress, Life transitions, Relationship Issues, Grief and Loss, and Trauma.

I maintain a very integrative, strength-based, client-centered approach as I am trained in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. With this history of experience and training, I hold valuable and effective skills particularly that I am able to apply to many clients from vastly diverse backgrounds.
